The idea: I would like to use the children's bedtime story titled "Goodnight Moon" as the basis for my Visual Story Project. I think it is a sweet and endearing book, it is short and well known, and I feel like it could be very versatile for this project. I would like to find photographs of different scenes of bedtime, from babies in cribs, to toddlers with stuffed animals all the way to adults reading side by side in bed. I think it could tell a story of growing older, in an interesting way.
Sontag: On page 4, Santag states "photographed images do not seem to be statements about the world so much as pieces of it, miniatures of reality that anyone can make or acquire."
Reflection: Sontag basically is saying that a photograph isn't meant to make a statement or explanation of our world, it is merely an example, a piece, a taste of our day to day reality. A photograph may have a message, but it is not the end all be all, there will be other photographs that disagree. Photos simply do not tell us about our world, they show us parts of it. I think this is a perfect example to go along with my project specifically, because I plan on showing just a small piece of someone's day, getting ready for bed. It is something everyone does, but does it define us? Does it describe our day, our lives? No, its just a part of the day, a small piece of it.
Search: The only image currently in my prezi is one that I google image searched just "bedtime story". I didnt want one that looked magazine-esque, I wanted one that looked homey and comfy, I just wanted a certain vibe to the photo that actually took awhile to find. The image I did choose is black and white, it has a cliche looking housewife/mother reading to her children in their bed, and they look happy and sleepy. I thought it was a good, general photo of a bedtime being read to children. I will get other photos of this scenario in different settings, different ages, and different tones. I want a very diverse selection.
Prezi: Currently I just have that lone image, but I think I might want to do a circular pattern with my images instead of a linear one, I feel like it might give my prezi a certain feel of a 'cycle' of bedtime, daytime, bedtime etc. along with getting older/growing up.
What's next: I want the story to begin with a baby at bedtime, and continue to all the way to an old couple side by side. I think it is a sweet story, and very compelling. I just am not sure exactly how I can fit in a 'conflict'. I guess the conflict itself could be growing up. I will try to incorporate the hardship of that within a photo, maybe a homeless teen sleeping on a bench, or something like that. To be honest the story will probably develop more as I continue.
My Point: I want to show a simple act of going to bed, something we all do, but in different areas, countries, bedrooms etc. It's all a different scene for everyone, and at every age we are in a new place. Whether its in our mother's arms as an infant, or in a college dorm, or your first apartment sleeping on an airbed with a threadbare sheet. I want to show the interesting differences there could be during this simple act.

I originally said that I wanted to use a poem as my topic for this project, but I have since changed my mind. I have not worked out all the specifics of my new topic yet, but I what I want to do is use a children's story/book and go from that for my visual story paper. I want to use a familiar one, so that people may recognize it, but I also want it to be short, since I am only needing ten photographs. I will be picking one soon.
